Priorities.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/ts_nm/us_libya

If any of you read the information contained in the link, I want to know your thoughts. Why do we continue to make this a priority? What do I mean by that? Well, dont get me wrong, I understand that 1) the U.S. is not the only country with intersests to protect, as many countries are involved in this now under the powers of NATO. 2) Something has to be done to get this piece of garbage out of power. And then I look at the footage of Japan, the live streaming videos of people residing in school gyms with little to no food. Many without shelter. Trains and buses and cars on top of what is left of homes, the aerial views of the forever geographic change to the shape of the country itself and farm fields that were their lively hood now, most likely, permanantly under the ocean...and people crying for help!

The Aftermath...

Taking Life for Granted

What a week right? Waking up to the news Friday morning and viewing the devestation on the television of the aftermath of the 8.9 earthquake and tsunami that followed in Japan, I just sat there in shock. Why? These natural disasters occur all the time right? I watched the warnings and read the urgent texts from my mother about the potential of a tsunami hitting Hawaii where my Marine brother who just turned 22, survived two deployments to Afghanistan and celebrated his 2nd wedding anniversary lives and I watched and watched and watched. I was overjoyed when I found that he was safe, the heightened sense of danger was over and then my focus redirected to Japan. I watched from home, from the car wash, from the restaurant, from my phone and felt myself drift back to 9/11.

The Human Experience & How It Shapes Us

The human experience. What is it? To each of us, its meaning varies. To me, the human experience shapes the way we think, the way we feel, our morals, our beliefs, and our political view. This week I was overwhelmed with news and redefining my own political stance based on my own human experiences. I don't know. Maybe it was the flu, the lack of fluids and food that got me thinking, or the hours upon hours of news I watched for two days straight with a NyQuil flooded mind. For a minute I even blamed it on Bieber Fever...but this week was eye opening. Like finding out that the person you have had a relationship with all these years is not really the person you think they are. I found myself watching the events in Egypt, Bahrain, Libya and Yemen unfold. I toggled between my ever faithful Fox news and the local media as I watched protesters gather across our country to have their voices heard regarding public works, unions, teaching and education. And then my mother called and I was given a crash course on radical Islam. Too much information but helpful. Her bottom line regarding Christianity and Radical Islam and the situation in the Middle East: "Angie, it doesn't matter if people here don't believe it. THEY believe it. And you cant reason with an ideology". I agree. By Friday night I had a migraine.

Made in China

The past few weeks, my children (Alex 6 & Madelline 8) have been particulary observant about how many of the things they own are "made in China". I have found it to be quite commical because it's not coming from anything I have said or have taught them. I don't really know where this fascination has come from.

At dinner Friday night, Alex looks at me and says, "I just cant take it anymore" as he is looking at his crayon and shaking his head. I asked, "what's that honey? what cant you take anymore?" He replies with frustration as he holds his crayon up to my face, "My crayon is made in China!" I tried not to laugh because he was visibly distraught and rightfully so! He says, "Why is everything made in China?" How do you answer that question age appropriately to a 6 year old without getting into economics, politics, foreign trade, outsourcing and how all those things come together? I really didn't know what to say and I found myself saying something that I wish I could have taken back immediately, "Welcome to America dear.".

My children's observation just added to my frustration already about how much we rely on other countries. As savvy as we are, as rich (but in debt) as we are, and with so much land and resources available...why are so many of our products made in China? And other countries for that matter. I know why. I really do. But why? Why do we have to go there? Why do we continue to rely on other countries so much for the things we need?

U.S Involvement in Egypt

So there were several things I wanted to discuss this week and perhaps I will post again on other topics later this week. Tonight as I logged on to the Internet, this headline caught my attention and THIS headline was the deciding factor in tonight's post.

On Yahoo's homepage: "Egypt protest leader urges U.S to act".
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/ts_nm/us_egypt_usa_elbaradei

For those of you who have not read the news this week, Egypt is falling apart. Riots, violence and theft of ancient relics. And the call for the overthrowing of a dictator. The people are tired of being oppressed and are standing up now to this dictator but in doing so, there has been a surge of violence. The situation in Egypt is dire and it was only a matter of time before the inevitable was requested. Now, as I imagine, once the U.S does get involved, because we most likely will, many will have missed this key request and will assume that the U.S is sticking it's nose where it does not belong once again.

Gray Matter

Wow! My first blog! This is pretty fun and exciting. So this will be the start of hopefully many posts that have been initiated via my Political Science class at Metropolitan State College of Denver. For my peers...you already know this as we are all in the same boat now.

I must say that when I first read the assignment, I was intimidated and excited all at the same time as I have been dying to try blogging. I never imagined my first blog would be created with politics in mind but rather something more along the lines of relationships, fashion, friend dilemmas...you know, everyday regular stuff that extends beyond a Facebook status update. But with my ability to talk about virtually any subject under the sun, this promises to be quite the adventure.
